Oceana Group is leading by example in demonstrating the South African large-scale commercial fishing industry’s commitment to operating responsibly. The group has been included in the 2012 Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI) and Johannesburg Stock Exchange’s (JSE) 2012 Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) Index. Oceana has also been selected as the recipient of an elaborate artwork by South African artist, Riaan van Zyl, in recognition of its support for Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa.
This is the 3rd year that Oceana has participated in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and the 8th consecutive year that it has been included in the SRI Index. The CDP encourages the top 100 companies listed on the JSE to measure and disclose their Greenhouse Gas Emissions. The CDLI comprises of those companies that obtained the best scores for the quality of their climate change disclosures and performance. Oceana’s CDP score improved to 95% in 2012 compared to 89% in 2011.Oceana participated in the CDP on a voluntary basis in 2011.
The SRI Index is regarded as a measure of a company’s overall approach to social responsibility. According to the JSE, companies are assessed against criteria across the triple bottom line (environment, society and economy), as well as governance. Within each area of measurement, companies are assessed based on policy, management, performance and reporting. An overview of the JSE’s 2012 SRI Index results shows that Oceana achieved a Best Practice rating for its overall environmental management and response to climate change.
Oceana Group Chief Executive Officer, Francois Kuttel, says, “These achievements are proof that Oceana, as the largest listed fishing company in South Africa, is delivering against the expectations of its key stakeholders. Measures, such as that provided by the CDP and SRI Index, as well as a company’s commitment to corporate social investment, are becoming increasingly important to investors and other stakeholders and thus have a far reaching effect on our business. Sustainability measures are also becoming an important tool for other industry leaders who use it to determine whether or not they want to do business with you.”
The artwork entitled, “Tokyo”, was awarded to Oceana for being the Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa donor partner that has made the most significant contribution in assisting the organisation – in achieving its vision in alleviating child hunger, specifically in the Western Cape.
According to Kuttel, the majority of Oceana employees were involved in at least one of the various Stop Hunger Now’s meal packaging events resulting in 87 240 meals for 1 110 children under the age of six years. In addition, the group sponsored a few crèches with canned fish from its Lucky Star range of product. The group’s total contribution to Stop Hunger is valued at R175 000. “By supporting Stop Hunger Now, we were provided with an opportunity to contribute towards alleviating the plight of people struggling to put food on the table amidst present economic and social conditions.”
