In 2003 Oceana invested R72 million in the horse mackerel industry with the purchase of the 7700 ton midwater trawl vessel,Desert Diamond.
“Such considerable investment was a clear sign of the Group’s commitment to Government’s policy of developing a sustainable fishery in the South African and Namibian horse mackerel industry,” says Gregg Vincent, MD of Blue Continent Products. “Through increased scientific research we are able to work towards the economically viable allocation of long-term commercial fishing rights.
“In addition, a critical phase is our South Africanisation programme to transfer skills from the all-Russian crew to South African recruits. Our goal is to develop and qualify 123 trainees to replace all foreign crew by 2010.
